Operation Christmas Drop (2020) – Review

Based on the beachside of an American Air Force base in Guam, Congressional aide Erica (Kat Graham) is tasked with unearthing reasons as to why the facility should be defunded and closed. Captain Andrew Jantz (Alexander Ludwig) is assigned to show the aide around, but it’s quickly apparent that the pair begin to clash after the real reasons for the visit start to shine through. A new romcom with a Christmas based feel released by Netflix that isn’t the worst way to spend an evening, but it’s probably not the best either.

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Director: Martin Wood
Writers: Gregg Rossen, Brian Sawyer
Starring: Kat Graham, Alexander Ludwig

With it being early November, that does beg the question as to whether it’s a little too early to be watching Christmas movies or not. Well Netflix don’t seem to think so if their latest release Operation Christmas Drop is anything to go by. One thing that instantly struck me with this, was the way in which it didn’t primarily focus on the romance side of things, as there did seem to be a pretty serious morale message behind the film itself.

With that being said, one of, if not the primary strength of the entire flick was the way in which this was based on an actual real-life humanitarian mission that the United States have engaged in each Christmas, since 1952. This helped with the feel-good factor and general heart-warming feel it managed to give anybody viewing.

On the whole, it’s fair to say that this rather straightforward romcom was incredibly easy on the eye, having been shot on location in Guam – a rather unique way of portraying a Christmas based movie at this time of year. The visuals were, for a large majority of the movie, stunning and left you wanting to take a visit to the Micronesian Islands yourself. Not only were the visuals on full display, but the people that inhabited them were also highlighted in an extremely positive manner.

Kat Graham and Alexander Ludwig starred as the two lead characters – Erica and Andrew – and demonstrated more than enough chemistry to believe in the romantic tale between the two, especially considering the romance side did take a backseat at times. Elsewhere, Virginia Madsen appeared as Congresswoman Bradford, the lady responsible for potentially closing down the military base, while Jeff Joseph and Janet Kidder adopted the role of General Hatcher and Lieutenant Blaine, respectively.

All in all, this is probably a sensible film selection as we head closer to Christmas, especially if you’re hoping for one that doesn’t contain your typical cold and wintery backdrop that many films of this nature provide. It’s worth noting that Operation Christmas Drop is now streaming on Netflix.

“Good thing the front door was open, I don’t think my huge ego would be able to fit through the window!”
